Mental health treatment that goes beyond medication.

Meds can only do so much…

Even when your mental health or substance use is stabilized, you see there are so many areas of your life that need work. You struggle with your thoughts. It’s easy to fall down a dark hole or get caught up in overthinking.  Your emotions impact your eating and you aren’t happy with your weight. Your sleep is out of whack. You haven’t exercised in a long time.  You may be feeling better,  but you are far from symptom free and life isn’t where you want it to be. But where to start? What could you add to your life that would help  and get you closer to the life you want? Mental health remedies have become a buzzword and everyone has an opinion or something to sell. You are open to trying things besides medication, but you don’t want to waste your time or money on things that don’t work.

When there is much to work on and so many options for help, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and feel stuck and unable to start. But like the saying goes, if nothing changes….nothing changes. Sometimes you need support, coaching, and accountability to develop a plan that is tailor-made to you and your desires and keep you on track with progress.

Every path to healing a life is unique. Find yours.

Imagine  a life of wellness. A healthy body, mind, and spirit. Relationships that are loving and supportive. What would YOUR wellness look like? Anything is possible. Dream big and begin the journey with a holistic approach.

There are many things that can be added to a treatment plan besides meds. I make sure to focus my recommendations on what science and research shows works the best. If something works well but I don’t do myself,  I will point you in the right direction.  Here are some things that might be great supports for your wellness:

  • I can support your peace and thoughts by incorporating mindfulness and mindfulness based self compassion. There is so much research that shows a daily practice of mindfulness can bring down anxiety, depression, pain, negative thoughts and self condemnation. If you are not using mindfulness, you are missing out on an effective, free method that has zero side effects.

  • Diet and exercise goals can be developed, supported and tracked with software that allows me to review your progress and work with you and improve these areas one step at a time. I am not a nutritionist or dietician, but my background and certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner allow me as a generalist to support goal development and coaching around these aspects of health.

  • Sleep issues are often best addressed with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). It is a proven treatment and is effective for 70% of people. I am trained to offer this treatment.

  • Relationships are key to health. We all need connection to others. We are wired this way as humans. These can be worked on deeply with your own therapist, but we can touch base on human interactions as an important area of wellness and include them as a part of your treatment plan.

  • Spirituality can be an integral part of mental health and recovery. We can incorporate this in whatever way makes sense and is helpful to you. Some want to discuss their faith and values and how it influences their life. Others have found that ending an appointment in prayer makes the work we do meaningful and healing on a deeper level. Your spiritual journey can be supported – but only if it is helpful to you. Others have been wounded by churches and religions and they would find this triggering and not helpful. I am deeply respectful of how you feel and would not violate your preference on whether or not to include a spiritual focus in your treatment.

FAQs about Holistic Services

  • This is a specific approach that involves 5 sessions that include homework related to sleep habits. For most people, it is highly effective–more so than medications for sleep. But—you have to be willing to do the work and make the changes the program requires. It is a type of therapy but the focus is just on sleep so you can continue with your own therapist while you do this time limited therapy. This research article that looked at many studies, found “CBT-i to be a highly effective treatment…. Its efficacy seems to be well-maintained over time and results in significant alleviation of symptoms. This supports recommendations that CBT-i should be used as the initial intervention for chronic insomnia when possible” Ann Intern Med. 2015;163:191-204. doi:10.7326/M14-2841 Click here for article.

  • Spirituality can mean many things to people. For some, it is their values. For others, it may be the belief that there is a soul or a part that exists apart from our body and mind. I am coming from the perpective of the Christian faith. Christians often appreciate incorporating things like faith and prayer in their treatment. I have also had people who were not Christians appreciate the added dimension of spirituality and found it very meaningful. This aspect of care is gently offered-never forced.

  • No. I am happy to work on wellness goals and our work can certainly help improve physical and mental health without you needing a diagnosable illness. However, without a mental health diagnosis, it may not be billable to your insurance and require you to be only cash pay for the services.
